For our first day of giving, we are proud to have selected the Canadian Cancer Society.
According to a 2018 special report issued by the Government of Canada, 1 in 2 Canadians is expected to be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime and 1 in 4 is expected to pass away from the disease.1
While the number of Canadians diagnosed with cancer each year continues to go up (mostly due to an aging population and better methods for catching the disease earlier), death rates as a result of cancer have decreased from 1988 to 2017 by 32% for males and 17% for females.2 This is largely due to better strategies and research in the areas of cancer care and control.
Canadian Cancer Society's Mission
"The Canadian Cancer Society is a national, community-based organization of volunteers whose mission is the eradication of cancer and the enhancement of the quality of life of people living with cancer."3
They work to achive their mission in 5 key ways:
- education and prevention
- support services
- government advocacy
There are many foundations working hard to battle this nondiscriminatory disease, but the Canadian Cancer Society has been recommended by one of our legal assistants, Lisa Esposto, as being one particular organization that has had an impact in her life. Lisa and her family have used the society’s support and services in the past, and we are happy to contribute to it on her behalf.
